SIGAUS contribution reduced to €50 per tonne

This is the first time in the 17 years of SIGAUS activity that there has been a reduction in the contributions of member companies that are used to finance the management of used oil and which are passed on to consumers of industrial oils, mainly motorists and industries. This measure has been possible thanks to an efficient management model and will be effective from 1 January.

Since it started operations in 2007, SIGAUS has created mechanisms that enable the efficient financing of used oil management, adapted to market conditions at all times. Thanks to these mechanisms, which are the product of a mature and highly stable operating model, it has been possible to adjust management costs in recent months by capitalising on high oil prices, which in turn have allowed favourable conditions for the sale of the products obtained from the treatment of waste oil, both regenerated lubricant bases and BIA fuel oil, thus reducing the deficit in waste oil management operations.

All this means that, for the first time since SIGAUS began its work in 2007, its Board of Directors has decided to make a 16% cut in the contributions used to finance the management of used oil, which are passed on to its member companies and from them to end consumers. This measure seeks to counteract the effects of rising inflation that has marked the evolution of the economy in the last two years, generating uncertainty and diminishing the confidence of consumers and companies.

This is the first time in the 17 years of SIGAUS activity that there has been a reduction in the contributions of member companies that are used to finance the management of used oil.

Thus, from 1 January, those who buy industrial oils will have to pay €0.05 for each kg purchased instead of the €0.06 charged up until 31 December 2023. When changing the oil in a car, which involves the estimated purchase of about 4 kg of new oil, the cost of waste oil management will fall from 24 cents to 20 cents.

This reduction accentuates the fact that in Spain the contribution required for the management of used industrial oil is significantly lower than in similar management systems in Europe, including France and Italy, where in 2023 the contribution has been set at 89 €/t and 70 €/t respectively.

For Spain to be able to apply the lowest tariff in Europe, “the key lies in working to make the system as efficient as possible, and adapting at all times to market conditions. Thus, when the cost of collecting and treating used oil was at an all-time high, we opted to absorb the extra cost and not pass it on to companies or consumers. Now that the circumstances are clearly the opposite, our model allows us to reduce the amount that motorists and industries have to pay when they buy lubricant oil”, says Eduardo de Lecea, General Manager of SIGAUS.
