A scavenger hunt involving 40 schoolchildren from CEIP Antonio Osuna provides the finishing touch to the environmental education project in Tres Cantos
This June, a group of forty 6th-grade pupils from CEIP Antonio Osuna Primary School, who won the drawing contest “SIGAUS Forest: bring it to life with art”, took part in an environmental scavenger hunt organised by SIGAUS. This activity marked the culmination of the educational project carried out in Tres Cantos around the planting of the 13th SIGAUS Forest, in collaboration with the town council. The day concluded a unique experience that combined outreach, creativity, enjoyment and environmental awareness.

SIGAUS Forests are a reforestation initiative led by the organisation responsible for managing used industrial oil, which has been running for over a decade. Each year, 1,000 trees are planted with the aim of creating new urban green spaces, offsetting CO₂ emissions, and helping to conserve biodiversity.
In 2024, Tres Cantos was chosen as the site of the 13th Forest, located in Parque Sur. However, in this edition, the project has gone a step further: for the first time, it has been complemented with a classroom-based educational programme throughout school year 2024-2025, with the participation of nearly 500 5th- and 6th-grade pupils from all eleven of the municipality's schools. This programme included training sessions on sustainability and the responsible management of used industrial oil, as well as a drawing contest in which all the pupils were able to “baptise” the trees in the forest.

“
This has been a particularly special initiative for us, because, beyond the planting, it has enabled us to grow and leave a legacy of environmental knowledge and awareness among both young and old in Tres Cantos,” says Ainhöa Lizarbe, Director of Institutional Relations and Communication at SIGAUS.

Thanks to the direct involvement of the pupils, almost half of the 1,000 trees planted have been marked with a biodegradable cork label featuring the name suggested by each participant. The forest therefore contributes to the environmental improvement of the area, while also providing an educational and emotional experience that connects the youngest members of the community with nature in a tangible and lasting way.
In recognition of the first prize in the drawing contest, awarded to the work entitled “The lucky tree” by a pupil from CEIP Antonio Osuna, the pupils of this school enjoyed an educational scavenger hunt in the local Parque de los Patos, with six themed stations: an obstacle course, memory games related to motor oil recycling, channelling tests, and a final joint activity to create a lava lamp with the materials obtained.
Those members of the group that managed to complete the course with the best result received a backpack as a prize. All participants were also presented with a personalised cookie with the image of Siggy (one of the SIGAUS mascots), made by APADIS, an association that helps people with intellectual disabilities, which the organisation has been collaborating with since 2018.
A Chromebook was also awarded to the winning pupil of the drawing contest. With this final scavenger hunt, SIGAUS brings to a close a project that has represented an important step forward in its commitment to fostering environmental awareness from an early age.

This occasion also involved another representative group of Tres Cantos, namely the over 65s, who have participated by proposing names to baptise the rest of the trees of the “13th SIGAUS Forest”. As in previous plantings, all the trees have been geolocated and photographed individually, with the information uploaded to the SIGAUS Forests website. Soon, all the trees will be available on the site, each with its identification label and exact location.
