SIGAUS Environmental Classroom, a communication success story at the 14th Environmental Journalism Congress, APIA

SIGAUS, the organisation in charge of handling used industrial oil in Spain, offered its support at another edition of this environmental journalism meeting, a key event at national level counting on over 220 attendees, where it showcased one of its most innovative dissemination and training projects: SIGAUS Environmental Classroom, set up in 2018 as part of its commitment to the future, reaching out to students and future professionals in the areas most related to the use of lubricants, all with the goal of training them in sustainability and the Circular Economy.

SIGAUS once again joined other collaborating organisations and companies at the 14th Edition of the National Congress organised every two years by the Association of Environmental Information Journalists (APIA), offering the 200-plus attendees, including journalists, representatives of public institutions, NGOs and companies, one of its most innovative projects in education and training: its Environmental Classroom, which formed part of this year’s programme as a communication success story alongside other topics that were debated under the title “Environmental communication: a global health issue”.

Fermín Martínez de Hurtado, the organisation's Director of Communication and Institutional Relations, used his speech to point to the importance of preparing upcoming generations to exercise their skills in the world of work, without losing sight of the environmental challenges they will face “sooner rather than later”, such as the scarcity of natural resources and the recovery of waste, climate change and its consequences, energy transition, and the green, sustainable, inclusive recovery that is now beginning.

Under the slogan ’Environmental communication: a question of global health’, the Congress was attended by more than 200 journalists, representatives of public institutions, NGOs and companies.

This classroom, as explained by the head of SIGAUS, works together with education centres imparting specialist courses related to the use of lubricants, such as automotion, mechanical manufacturing and engineering; the classroom provides training on waste management for industrial oil, as well as obligations and good practices, “thus joining SIGAUS's environmental management in order to promote and bolster sensitivity around environmental protection and rational use of increasingly scarce natural resources among students”, said Fermin Martinez de Hurtado.

Participants at the Congress took part in numerous debates, conferences and dialogues over the course of the two days, dealing with how human health and the environment are related and how this relationship has changed after the global COVID pandemic and in the context of the climate emergency now affecting us.

The Congress was officially inaugurated by Hugo Morán, Secretary of State for the Environment, accompanied by María Neira, Director of Public Health and Environment of the World Health Organization (WHO), who gave the opening speech. Important issues such as global sustainability, the conservation of ecosystems and biodiversity, deforestation, the conclusions of the last Climate Change Summit held in Glasgow, sustainable food and eco-innovation, among many others, were all raised at the event.
