SIGAUS and municipal representatives visit the planting of the 8th Forest in Villalbilla

The Madrid town of Villalbilla received a visit from several SIGAUS representatives with the objective of learning first-hand about the result of the conditioning and planting work for what will be the 8th Forest that the Entity has created in the Community of Madrid. Together with the town mayor, Antonio Barahona and the councillor for the environment, Isabel Mesas, there was a walkthrough of this new green space with 1,000 new trees, which join the 7,000 previously planted by SIGAUS since it began the “SIGAUS Forests” social responsibility initiative in 2012.

The 8th SIGAUS Forest, located in the town of Villalbilla in Madrid, is already a reality that was visited, together with the town mayor and the councillor for the environment, by the President of SIGAUS, Buenaventura González del Campo, the CEO, Eduardo de Lecea and the Institutional Relations and Communications Director, Fermín Martínez de Hurtado, who were able to walk through the 5 plots granted by the town hall to host the 1,000 stone pines (pinus pinea) and aleppo pines (pinus halepensis) that form part of this new green space.

These are two of the most efficient species for absorbing pollutant emissions, according to data from the Ministry for Ecological Transition (MITECO), which estimates that these two types of conifers stand out in this regard, as they absorb 60 kg of CO2/20 years/foot and 31 kg of CO2/20 years/foot, respectively.

Since 2012, when SIGAUS launched the “SIGAUS Forests” initiative as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility program, the Entity has been working to compensate the emission of greenhouse gases and to avoid climate change through the reforestation of areas granted by the various town halls that it signs agreements with. In the case of Villalbilla, the forest is located at Calle Alfonso X el Sabio.

Once they reach adult age, these trees will also act as an acoustic and visual protective screen from the nearby tracks of the high-speed train (AVE), thus providing more well-being and quality of life for the residents in this area as well as shade for the footpaths to be enjoyed by walkers and bicycle riders.

As well as helping to compensate for the CO2 emissions, the forest will act as an acoustic and visual protective screen from the nearby tracks of the high-speed train (AVE), thus providing better quality of life for residents in the area.

The new forested space has been identified by two signposts that provide information on this new SIGAUS Forest, resulting from the collaboration between the Entity and the Villalbilla Town Hall, and also mention the environmental benefits associated to this type of initiative, designed to reward citizens for the efforts they make by supporting the correct management of industrial oil waste.

Apart from the donation of the 1,000 trees, SIGUAS has taken on the installation of a drip irrigation system and will assume the replanting of any trees that must be replaced after the first summer period after planting, until reaching the total number of trees donated to the town.

8 forests to combat climate change

With this new SIGAUS forest, there have now been 8,000 trees planted in various towns in Madrid, which can now enjoy these new green spaces that exceed 20 hectares of land. “Our commitment to the environment goes beyond mere waste management and includes leaving a real legacy that effectively contributes to the fight against a phenomenon, climate change, which is currently one of the largest environmental challenges we are facing”, mentioned the CEO of SIGAUS, Eduardo de Lecea, during the visit to this new forest.

Buenaventura González del Campo, President of the Entity, agreed with this statement, and referred to the “palpable benefits” that the residents of this town will start to enjoy thanks to this new green space, which is precisely located in one of the areas in the town with the highest population and public amenities.
