After being suspended, due to the coronavirus pandemic, the works initially planned for last March, for the planting of the Ninth SIGAUS Forest were finally completed a few days ago: 3.3 hectares with 1,000 Pinus halepensis that increase the city’s green areas and the number of parks and gardens in the rapidly growing neighbourhood that is La Legua. This fact was emphasised by the mayoress, in a presentation to the media in which she thanked SIGAUS for financing this initiative and underlined the City Council's commitment to sustainability.

For his part, Buenaventura González del Campo, President of SIGAUS, thanked the municipal council for their presence in this inaugural visit and pointed out that SIGAUS’ goal is to protect the environment: through the collection and management of industrial waste oil, but that, additionally, for years they’ve been trying to raise awareness through initiatives that transcend such work, such as the SIGAUS Forests, in which participants in different competitions on social networks can give their names to the planted trees, that already amount to 9,000 in 9 cities around Madrid.

The mayoress and other members of the municipal council visited this new green area together with SIGAUS, and expressed their appreciation that it has become a reality for the enjoyment of the people of Toledo.

Together with the mayoress, the councillor responsible for Parks and Gardens, Marta Medina, and the councillor in charge of Street Cleaning and Maintenance of Municipal Centres, Ramón Lorente, as well as, in representation of SIGAUS, its General Director, Eduardo de Lecea, joined by the Director of Institutional Relations and Communication, Fermín Martínez de Hurtado, visited the new forest.

The new SIGAUS Forest is located on the perimeter of the residential area of La Legua, a neighbourhood in full expansion, which now has a new extensive green area also equipped with rest areas and playgrounds. The 1,000 Aleppo pines that are, now growing will be able to absorb, after 20 years, almost 31 tons of CO2, thus becoming a new green space for the city of Toledo.

SIGAUS has financed 100% of the plantation, including the installation of a drip irrigation system for each and every one of the new trees. In addition, as they have been doing in previous forests, they are committed to maintaining the plantation and carrying out any replanting after the first year. The trees of the Ninth SIGAUS Forest will be individually photographed and labelled with the names given by 1,000 users participating in the social media campaign ‘Plant life with Mr Tree’, in which users can customise a tree with different backgrounds and decorative elements. Subsequently, users will be able to see a photo of the tree with their name through the SIGAUS Forest website: www.hacesmasdeloquecrees.org.
