1,000 trees to offset CO2 emissions in Alcalá de Henares

The 10th SIGAUS Forest is now growing in Cervantes’ birthplace. Buenaventura González del Campo and Eduardo de Lecea, President and General Director of SIGAUS respectively, accompanied the mayor of the Madrid town, Javier Rodríguez Palacios, and Enrique Nogués, Councillor for the Environment, during a visit to this new green area. This new natural space of 3.4 hectares and 1,000 trees of different species, will help offset greenhouse emissions, thus favouring the absorption of CO2 and the fight against the effects of climate change.

In order to explore first-hand the latest addition to this initiative, the 1,000 new trees planted in the 10th SIGAUS Forest in Alcalá de Henares, an official visit was organised which was attended by the mayor of the city, Javier Rodríguez Palacios, and the Councillor for the Environment, Enrique Nogués, as well as by Buenaventura González del Campo and Eduardo de Lecea, President and General Director of SIGAUS respectively, who were able to walk through the different plots and see the development of the trees planted.

The new green area has been distributed among several plots of a total of 3.4 hectares located south of the A2 motorway, and is home to trees of varying species, most of them of the Pinus halepensis variety (Aleppo pine), one of the most efficient species in the absorption of greenhouse gases and which, according to data from the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, is capable of absorbing up to 31 kg of CO2 per tree in the first 20 years. This new area also features other specimens of other species, such as white mulberry, common ash, almond and hackberry trees, which will contribute to providing shady areas for sports and leisure activities for the residents of the area.

This forest is the result of the collaboration agreement signed last May between the town council and SIGAUS for the donation of 1,000 trees within the framework of its Corporate Social Responsibility initiative ‘You do more than you think’, which SIGAUS launched in 2010 through an action that combines the concept of advergaming and a real project to protect the environment and people's health.

In addition to donating the 1,000 trees and installing the drip irrigation system, as part of the agreement, SIGAUS will also be responsible for any replanting required following the first summer period after planting, to complete the number of trees donated.

The forest is home to 1,000 trees of different species, such as Aleppo pine, white mulberry, common ash, almond and hackberry trees, which will contribute to providing shady areas for sports and leisure activities for the residents of the area.

With this new SIGAUS Forest, there are now 10,000 trees that have been planted in various locations in Madrid and Toledo, areas that are already benefiting from these new green areas which cover more than 30 hectares. “SIGAUS is proud to have reforested 10,000 trees over the last ten years, working with cities to create green and sustainable environments that help fight against climate change and providing areas for the practice of sports and leisure activities that improve the quality of life of residents”, commented Eduardo de Lecea.

A forest that is also virtual

The trees that make up the 10th SIGAUS Forest have been christened thanks to the Social Media campaign “10 Years, 10 Forests”, in which the first 1,000 participants won the chance to name one of the trees of the new SIGAUS Forest. This campaign has helped to publicise the ‘SIGAUS Forest’ project and celebrate its 10th anniversary by raising awareness about environmental protection.

The trees of the 10th SIGAUS Forest will be labelled with the winning names soon, and photographed and geolocated, so that they can also be visited online through the website www.hacesmasdeloquecrees.org.
