Environmental journalists join the SIGAUS Environmental Classroom

Through the cooperation of the Organisation and the APIA association, which brings together Spain’s expert environmental journalists, it has been possible to provide these professionals with the technical knowledge required to properly communicate to citizens, the information relating to the management of used industrial oils and the importance of their collection and treatment.

The General Director of SIGAUS, Eduardo de Lecea, and the managers of the Sertego used oil regeneration plant, welcomed a group of environmental journalists to their facilities in Fuenlabrada, in Madrid, so that these environmental communicators could learn first-hand everything relating to the management of this hazardous waste which, incidentally, the general public knows very little about.

After receiving the theoretical training required to correctly communicate to society everything relating to the management of used oils, this group of journalists from different media, including communicators and freelance journalists, as well as the President of the APIA, María García, were able to benefit from a full explanatory tour of the Sertego regeneration plant and learn about how waste is treated. The plant is one of the 155 authorised management plants that work with SIGAUS in this municipality located in Southern Madrid.

The journalists showed great interest in the system’s operation, and in the detailed process that enables this very polluting waste, to be transformed into new raw material or energy after being subjected to the appropriate treatments.

The journalists were accompanied by managers from the plant and SIGAUS, visiting the control screen room which monitors the proper operation of the entire process, as well as the laboratory and its operators, where both the waste arriving at the plant and the resulting regenerated base are analysed.

In both the training and the guided tour, the journalists showed great interest in the system’s operation, and in the detailed process that enables this very polluting waste, to be transformed into new raw material or energy after being subjected to the appropriate treatments.

“The oil’s life cycle is indeed a good example of the Circular Economy,” explained Eduardo de Lecea, who listed the advantages of being able to transform this waste into a resource “over and over again, giving it infinite life.”

The President of the APIA association, María García, thanked SIGAUS for this type of initiative for the press, which she considered to be “essential to enable communicators to have access to the most reliable sources and proven information.” “Because only in this way will it be possible for us to properly communicate to society these matters which are mostly unknown and, in certain cases, way too technical.”
