Villanueva del Pardillo boasts a new ‘SIGAUS Forest’ with 1,000 trees
The planting of the ‘Fourteenth SIGAUS Forest’ has been completed, offering a new urban green area covering more than 12.000m2 and home to 1,000 trees which will help offset CO2 emissions, improve biodiversity and expand the municipality’s natural areas. To see the results of this initiative first-hand, representatives from SIGAUS and Villanueva del Pardillo Town Council visited the forest. This initiative has also included an environmental education programme carried out in the town’s five schools with Year 6 pupils, who will be responsible for naming the trees in the forest.

The ‘Fourteenth SIGAUS Forest’ is now a reality in Villanueva del Pardillo Located on a municipal plot of over 12,000 square metres at Calle Camilo José Cela, 50, this new green area comprises 1,000 trees of native species adapted to the Mediterranean climate: 500 stone pines, 250 holm oaks and 250 cork oaks. With this initiative, the municipality is gaining a new natural area that will help improve air quality, remove CO₂, support local wildlife and offer residents a more pleasant environment for walking, leisure and sport.
To see the results of the planting for themselves, Eduardo Fernández Navarro, Mayor of Villanueva del Pardillo, visited the new forest alongside other representatives from the Town Council, accompanied by Buenaventura González del Campo and Eduardo de Lecea, President and CEO of SIGAUS respectively.
The mayor of Villanueva del Pardillo, Eduardo Fernández Navarro, emphasised that “this new urban forest reinforces Villanueva del Pardillo’s commitment to sustainability and the continuous improvement of its green areas. Through this collaboration with SIGAUS, the municipality has gained a new natural area designed for the enjoyment of local residents, with a view to continue moving towards a model of a healthier, more liveable and more environmentally friendly city”.
Buenaventura González del Campo, President of SIGAUS, emphasised that “with this Fourteenth SIGAUS Forest, we are continuing an initiative through which we aim to bring nature closer to the public and generate a positive impact beyond our own activities. Green infrastructure plays an essential role in urban environments, both for its environmental contribution and for its ability to improve people’s quality of life.”

“
The forest is home to 1,000 trees of various native species that will improve air quality and offer residents a new area for outdoor leisure.
„
For his part, Eduardo de Lecea, CEO of the organisation that manages industrial waste oil, highlighted the social and educational value of the project: “SIGAUS Forests are an example of how an environmental initiative can transcend simply planting trees and become a tool for raising public awareness. In Villanueva del Pardillo, in addition to creating a new green area, we wanted to involve young people so that they’d feel a part of it from the very beginning.”
To ensure the success of the project, SIGAUS has funded the supply of the trees, the planting work and the installation of a drip irrigation network that will help the trees survive during their first few years of life. Furthermore, the organisation has committed to any replanting required following the first summer after planting, should this be necessary, until the planned total of 1,000 trees is reached. The Town Council, for its part, will take on the subsequent maintenance of the trees.
The forest also features two information panels designed to explain the project and the species that make up this new urban forest. It is also planned that each tree will have its own individual identification, so that community and school involvement is directly linked to this new green area.

Environmental awareness in schools in Villanueva del Pardillo
The initiative includes an educational programme aimed at schoolchildren in Villanueva del Pardillo. This environmental activity was carried out with the town’s five schools, involving around 200 Year 6 pupils, with the aim of both raising their environmental awareness and emphasising the importance of properly managing waste oil from vehicles and machinery.
Through an interactive activity designed as an ‘escape room’, pupils were able to explore concepts such as the circular economy, nature conservation and proper waste management. They will also name the trees in the forest through the ‘SIGAUS Forest: Give it life with art’ drawing competition. The Town Council will also launch a campaign aimed at families and older residents of Villanueva del Pardillo, inviting them to name one of the trees in the ‘SIGAUS Forest’, thereby strengthening their emotional connection to this new green area.
The trees of the ‘Fourteenth SIGAUS Forest’ will soon be photographed, geolocated and labelled with the chosen names so that users can consult this information on the SIGAUS Forests website: www.hacesmasdeloquecrees.org.
The ‘SIGAUS Forests’ project is a reforestation and environmental awareness initiative that has now reached 14,000 trees planted since 2012 in various municipalities across Madrid and Toledo. With this new urban forest, SIGAUS is taking another step forward in a journey that combines creating green areas with raising environmental awareness among the public, particularly young people.
