Waste generating sectors
Metal, energy, construction, public works, machine-tool or automation, are some of the sectors with producing processes in which different industrial oils are used (hydraulic, dielectric, thermal, cutting, transmission, gear, turbine, etc.). In Spain, every year and through the network of managers who work under the framework of the IMS, we serve about 10,000 producers in the industrial sector, performing around 22,000 used industrial oil collection services.
These are usually large volume collections with a high percentage of 'foreign' substances which are added during the application process of the industrial oil. This is specially true in the case of certain industrial processes such as metal machining and transformation that generate a residue, used cutting fluid, and other substances such as mud or machining emulsions, metal mud, etc., in which the percentage of used oil is minimum compared to the total waste, which also has water and metal particles.
The same applies in processes such as water and steam degreasing, containing a small amount of used oil.

Why is it necessary to treat waste oil?

Because, if not managed properly, due to their composition and characteristics, they can seriously damage the environment and pose a health risk.
After being subjected to high pressures and temperatures during use, waste oils may contain toxic substances or compounds of chlorine, phosphorus, sulphur, zinc, heavy metals (lead, cadmium) etc., as well as aromatic compounds, all of which are highly polluting.
Because of its chemical transformation, its poor biodegradability and the emission of gases (if improper combustion takes place), it becomes a hazardous waste requiring treatment.
