SIGAUS closes 2021 with the management of 128,711 t of used oils, achieving a regeneration rate of 79%

SIGAUS recently submitted its 2021 Official Reports to the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITERD), as well as to the competent bodies of the different Autonomous Communities, on behalf of its member companies. They report on compliance with the ecological goals established in the regulations on used oils, thanks to the management of 128,711 tonnes of used oils that were fully recovered during the past year. 79% were recovered, which made it possible to return more than 63,000 tonnes of new lubricants to the market and thus, save 30 million barrels of oil.

The 2021 Official Reports offer detailed information on the results of the management carried out by SIGAUS during the past year, with extensive analysis supported by charts, statistical tables and maps that compile key data. The document supports compliance with the obligations assumed by SIGAUS, and is an essential communication tool for competent Public Bodies to monitor the activity and achievements made by the System, thus ensuring the transparency of the IMG in all its actions.

The reports include data on industrial oils placed on the national market by the 249 companies adhered to the System, with a breakdown by type of oil, origin, quarter and market location. Of particular note is the remarkable recovery in economic activity, which was reflected in a growth of 11.4% in the volume sold compared to 2020 (13.5% in the automotive market), with 294,981 tonnes of industrial oils being placed on the market. The automotive sector was once again the largest consumer, with 166,721 tonnes, 56% of all lubricant oils.

The support of an extensive management network

The Reports also include a significant quantitative analysis on the generation of used oils in Spain and the comprehensive service that is provided by SIGAUS in collecting and treating all of it, thanks to a network of 166 management companies that have 207 management facilities, with which it covers all tasks relating to waste management: collection, transport, storage, analysis and treatment throughout Spain.

100% of the recovered used oil was subjected to different types of treatments to transform it into new products.

Last year, through this management network, it managed a total of 68,668 used-oil production establishments, distributed throughout 4,827 municipalities in Spain. 156,927 gross tonnes of used oils were collected (including 18% water and other waste) through more than 174,000 collection operations, with significant activity in areas of particular difficulty, such as rural, mountain and sparsely-populated areas. They assisted 17,096, 12,346 and 3,076 establishments, respectively, which generated significant amounts of used oil.

From waste to resource

After deducting water and waste, the resulting 128,711 tonnes were subjected to different types of treatment to transform the waste into new products. More than 101,000 tonnes were used for regeneration, 79.63% of the total renewable used oils (which is almost 15% above the level required by law). The remaining 21% was treated for decontamination and was used as a fuel similar to fuel oil.

In addition to meeting the three legally established ecological goals (recovery, valorisation and regeneration of used oil), SIGAUS management in 2021 was especially beneficial in terms of saving raw materials and greenhouse gas emissions, as the application of used oil in the manufacture of new lubricant bases enabled the production of more than 63,000 tonnes of new lubricants, enough to fill the crankcases of more than 15 million vehicles, thus avoiding the emission of 67,701 t of CO2 and the use of 30 million barrels of oil.

The quantity of used oils processed as fuel for industrial use—for subsequent energy use—enabled the production of 23,483 tonnes of fuel oil, saving 24 GWh of energy and avoiding the emission into the atmosphere of 14,299 tonnes of CO2 (compared with that fuel having been produced through oil refining).

Comprehensive monitoring at each generation point

All this information comes from the SIGAUS Technological Information System (TIS), an essential tool for the preparation of these reports, which is fed by the official documents provided by the companies that operate within the framework of the IMG and that certify the traceability from the establishment generating the used oil to its final destination.

To complete the information provided, the Official Reports provide information that has been enriched with statistical data on population, rurality or economic activities, which detail how used oil is generated in Spain by territory, providing data on the waste collection service in vulnerable areas, such as rural and mountain environments, and those near protected areas or water resources.

Supplementary reports

The Official Reports submitted also contain the Annual Monitoring and Control Report on the Execution of the Prevention Business Plan that SIGAUS has been leading in the industrial oil sector since 2010. It should be noted that, last year, the 138 companies that reported having taken prevention measures to SIGAUS carried out 537 new actions, distributed among the 7 lines of prevention that contribute to minimising the impact of industrial oil on the environment.

It also includes information on the review and monitoring carried out to verify the data provided by both the member companies and authorised management companies, and on the 2020 Lubricants Market Study in Spain, prepared by the independent consulting firm, PwC, and which served to establish the market share for which SIGAUS was responsible in 2021. The document ends with a preview of the different actions planned in the SIGAUS Communication Plan for dialogue with its different audiences during 2022.
