134,000 tonnes collected and objectives reached in 2017

SIGAUS has presented the Public Administrations with the report regarding the management carried out in 2017, in compliance with the establishments of article 14 of Royal Decree 679/2006. The report, issued by SIGAUS on behalf of its adhered companies in the autonomous regions and the Ministry of Agriculture and Fishing, Food and Environment, includes information on the economic agents that participate in the system, industrial oils place on the market, used oil collected and compliance with ecological targets, among other aspects.

In 2017, SIGAUS collected a total of 170,436 gross tonnes of used oils (including contaminants present in the waste collected, such as water or sediments) in 69,055 production points in 4,871 different municipalities. After separation, during the pre-treatment, the fraction of contaminants, the final management carried out by SIGAUS, increased to 134,508 tonnes of used industrial oil thanks to the joint work of the management network working under the framework of the Entity: 153 companies and 196 facilities at the end of last year, whose activities were recorded through the Information Technology System (ITS), a tool created for control and validation of the System's management operations: in total, 178,153 over the last year. Of the total managed, 93,841 tonnes were treated through regeneration processes, an amount that represents 71.14% of the total renewable used oils collected, well above the 65% established by legislation as the minimum percentage that must be regenerated. For its part, 37,556 tonnes were destined to treatment for posterior energy recovery, with the objective of transforming the waste that is not suitable for regeneration as fuel. The rest, 3,111 tonnes, were designated to material recycling for use in other applications.

OBJECTIVES MET

These figures confirm the compliance with the various ecological objectives established by law: to collect 95% of the used oil generated (the used oil recovered exceeds the 45% placed on the market by adhered companies, therefore, taking into consideration that the oil is reduced during use by between 55 and 60% of its volume, according to the authorities, this objective would be confirmed); to recover 100% of the used oil collected and to regenerate at least 65% of the renewable used oil collected, as stated.

Yet another year, the legal objectives of collection, recovery and regeneration of used oils have been met, as verified in the reports issued in electronic format to the relevant Administrations

ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITS

The used oil collected last year, 134,508 tonnes, is the equivalent of the capacity of almost 4,600 maritime merchandise containers that, transported by train, would have a length of almost 31,800 meters, After the treatment of the used oil collected through regeneration, approximately 62,500 tonnes of lubricants were returned to the market, enough to fill the tank in over 15.4 million cars, two thirds of all of the cars in Spain.

Thanks to the regeneration treatment of the mentioned 98,841 t, over 281,500 tonnes of CO2 were not emitted to the atmosphere, equivalent to the amount produced by 675 return trips from Madrid to New York on one of the largest passenger planes that cover this route.

For its part, the energy generated through used oil that was transformed into fuel for energy recovery last year was 407 GWh, equivalent to the amount consumed by the movement of all of the trains in the Madrid Metro system during 411 days.

RISING MARKET

The 226 adhered companies that formed part of SIGAUS at the end of last year placed 295,142 t of industrial oils on the market, 1.2% less than the volume adhered to the system in 2016, due to the exclusion from said market of the industrial oils supplied to the vehicle sector, as the resulting waste is not the responsibility of the manufacturers associated to SIGAUS (without said exclusion, the market grew by over 2%).

OFFICIAL REPORTS

Together with this data, the official reports created by SIGAUS and sent to the Public Administrations contain information on the economic agents that participate in the System (industrial oil manufacturers and used oil managers), the market quota assumed by SIGAUS in 2017, the monitoring of the Business Prevention Plan, the control actions and programs for the manufacturer and manager declarations and the Communication Plan 2018.

Like last year, the reports have been sent in electronic format and are included in the Used Oil Observatory, a digital platform made available to the regulatory bodies and that, as well as the report, includes tools for data consultation, access to log information and a geographic display.
