SIGAUS renews its commitment to the ARTIGAS Centre for Environmental Education of Bizkaia, which has reopened after its renovation works

The Artigas-Arraiz Centre for environmental education on waste, located in Bizkaia, has recently reopened its doors following the renovation works carried out over the past year to “share the environmental message that has always been disseminated from this centre in a more innovative and attractive manner, and making this a 21st-century interpretation centre,” said the Regional Councillor for Sustainability and the Natural Environment of Bizkaia, Amaia Antxustegi, during a meeting with the partners that support the initiative, SIGAUS being among them.

For the third consecutive year, SIGAUS, the Entity in charge of the correct management of used industrial oil in Spain, has formalised its support for the Artigas-Arraiz Waste Interpretation Centre, which is dependent on the Regional Council of Bizkaia, whose facilities have been renovated this year in order to disseminate, in a more innovative and attractive manner, its training programmes on waste, and its workshops, audiovisual projections and visits to its interactive exhibition.

The target audience are pupils of all ages (pre-school, primary, secondary, vocational and university training, as well as associations) with whom we work on understanding the comprehensive process for managing waste: its origin, treatments, recovery and correct disposal in order to place value on its importance, and on sustainability, as well as the principles of the Circular Economy.

One of the most important new features of the renovated centre is the possibility of taking a virtual tour of all its rooms, which have been recreated in 3D.

SIGAUS, together with the rest of the centre’s ‘partners’, attended the reopening and signing of the new collaboration agreement for this academic year, also taking a guided tour of the new facilities: accompanied by the Managing Director of Garbiker (the public company dependent on the Bizkaia Regional Council, in charge of managing the centre), Jon Sáenz de Viguera, and the Regional Councillor for Sustainability and Natural Environment, Amaia Antxustegi, who addressed a few words of thanks to all those present, for supporting the centre’s work and for their commitment to environmental information and training.

Aesthetically speaking, the centre has been modernised, now presenting simpler and cleaner lines, as is the case of the main entrance hall to the centre, which now includes a giant screen for visitors to view audiovisual explanatory material relating to the management process of different waste and the operation of the different treatment plants that receive it.

In addition, all the media with information have been updated, as have the interactive games available throughout the entire tour, the information panels and the stands which are used for their display: as in the case of SIGAUS, real samples of waste, by-products and finished materials resulting from its treatment, as well as computer graphics and models that explain the processes that are followed for such treatment and recovery processes.

New virtual tour

One of the most important new features of the renovated centre is the possibility of taking a virtual tour, thanks to which visitors can gain ‘access’, from their screens in an almost realistic way, to all the rooms, which have been digitally recreated in 3D, and therefore feel like they’re present in all the areas as if it were an in-person visit. In addition, there is a small screen from which an instructor from the centre accompanies you in real time, explaining everything you see, in addition to giving you access to the videos and screens of all the rooms, the explanatory panels (in which it is even possible to zoom in), and answering, through a live chat, to all your questions and doubts in order to make the visit a truly participatory experience.

“Our work has always transcended mere waste management. That’s why working with centres like this one, and with the rest of the companies and entities that have joined us in this initiative, is key for us. Because only in this way, will we be truly contributing to the necessary transition towards circularity that, now more than ever, society and the times we’re living in are demanding from us,” points out Eduardo de Lecea, General Director of SIGAUS.
