Under the motto ‘Towards 20.30’, the National Environmental Congress (CONAMA) has held its 14th Edition in the Palacio Municipal de Congresos in Madrid this week. Four days - between November 26 and 29- during which time more than 1,000 speakers have conferenced in this benchmark forum in the subject of sustainability in Spain within the framework of a program that has included master lectures, expert meetings, a broad outreach zone, -in which SIGAUS was present with an information stand-, and recreational activities such as sustainable fashion parades, disclosure workshops for schools and recognition awards, among many others.

CONAMA 2018 has received representatives from government agencies, companies, universities, environmental organizations, researchers and scholars, among others, in order to discuss matters such as circular economy, urban mobility, biodiversity, water, or adaptation to climate change. This edition has particularly emphasized the ambitious challenge that entails addressing the compliance of the 17 Objectives of Sustainable Development (OSD) of the United Nations and the global framework of the 2030 Agenda.

In line with the work carried out on its last Sustainability Memory, where SIGAUS deeply analyses how its work helps fulfilling these Objectives of Sustainable Development, the entity's stand welcomed the visit of the High Commissioner in Spain for the 2030 Agenda, top government representative appointed to boost this strategic road map and Spain's compliance. Likewise, other prominent personalities of the environmental scene were interested in SIGAUS’ activity and visited its stand, such as former Environmental Minister, Cristina Narbona.

The stand of SIGAUS received the visit of the High Commissioner in Spain for the 2030 Agenda, Cristina Gallach and the former Environment Minister, Cristina Narbona.

During the Congress inauguration, the Minister for Ecological Transition, Teresa Rivera, called for making the knowledge acquired in the last years available to serve the challenge involved in stopping environmental damage. “We need to know, and we know enough to know that knowing is no longer enough, and that it is imperative to act swiftly and jointly with all administrations and as society in general in order to achieve true sustainable development and ecological transition.”

On her side, Madrid's Mayor, Manuela Carmena, who was also present in the inauguration of CONAMA's new edition, claimed that “economic development needs an official basis and an ecological roof, that is, that of the planet's limitations.” On his side, Carlos Izquierdo, advisor on Environment and Territorial Planning of the Community of Madrid, noted the increase in environmental awareness since the first CONAMA was held in 1992, and everyone's commitment with the Objectives of Sustainable Development and the 2030 Agenda.

“We need to act quickly in order to face challenges such as adaptation to climate change and loss of biodiversity, guaranteeing human well-being and creating opportunities for development and employment. Achieving this depends on what we do from now on,” concluded Gonzalo Echagüe, president of CONAMA Foundation.

After four days of intense activity, CONAMA's 14th edition ended with more than 8,000 visitors after awarding acknowledgments to environmental entities and personalities that this year are celebrating their anniversary such as the Spanish National Park Network, WWF-Spain, environmental reporter Joaquín Araujo, the Vitoria-Gasteiz Green Ring or the Biodiversity Foundation, among others.
