The 11th SIGAUS Forest is now a reality in Boadilla del Monte

The Mayor of the municipality, Javier Úbeda, and the General Director of SIGAUS, Eduardo de Lecea, together with other representatives of the town council and the non-profit organisation, visited the forest, made up of 1,000 trees—the result of an agreement between the town council of Boadilla del Monte and SIGAUS, last November. A forest financed entirely by SIGAUS within the framework of its Social Responsibility policy.

The planting of the 11th SIGAUS Forest was completed recently. A green space that occupies 3.2 hectares and will be home to 1,000 ash trees (Fraxinus angustifolia) that have contributed to regenerating the mass of ash trees in Vega Sur de la Fresnera (Monte Sur, Boadilla). This area is widely used by the residents of Boadilla due to its value as a multi-purpose forest, perfect for outdoor leisure and sporting activities.

In addition, the forest is a high-impact environmental action, as the mass of ash trees in the area includes very old specimens with no young trees to replace them. Therefore, these 1,000 new trees, provided by SIGAUS, will contribute to preserving the natural mass of ash trees, and to the diversification and improvement of the vegetation cover in this area.

“We are delighted to add 1,000 new trees to our ‘SIGAUS Forests’ reforestation project. Vega Sur de la Fresnera is a unique enclave for its environmental, social and cultural value. This forest will help raise public awareness of the importance of ash woodlands, and help clean up our atmosphere”, said the General Director of SIGAUS.

The forest has panels informing residents of the characteristics of the species planted and the benefits it brings to the environment. Each tree will absorb up to 90 kg of CO2 in its first 20 years, according to data from the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge.

SIGAUS has financed 100% of the plantation, including the installation of a drip irrigation system for each and every one of the new trees. In addition, as they have been doing in previous forests, they have committed to any replanting required following the first summer.

The 11th Forest also online

The trees that make up the 11th SIGAUS Forest will be photographed and labelled with the names chosen by the winners of the ‘Forest challenge’ social media campaign, in which users took on the challenge of reforesting different landscapes online using stickers of animals, trees and skies. Soon, users will be able to see the photo of their tree and consult its geographic coordinates through the SIGAUS Forest website: www.hacesmasdeloquecrees.org.

This initiative is part of the ‘SIGAUS Forests’ reforestation and environmental awareness project. It started in 2012 and already includes 11 forests and 11,000 trees distributed across different locations around Madrid, thus contributing to improving the biodiversity of these areas and the fight against climate change.
