Combining economic development with the preservation of natural resources is the objective of each and all of the entities that yesterday, September 18th, supported a great Circular Economy Pact launched by MAPAMA and the Ministry of Economy, Industry and Competitiveness. Among them was SIGAUS, the Spanish Entity responsible for the correct management of used industrial oil, which agreed with the Minister Isabel Garvía Tejerina on the “wish to change our production model towards a circular economy in order to make the most of our resources”.

SIGAUS, as an example of circular economy in the lubricant sector, has adhered to a Compact followed by 55 entities and associations from different sectors.

García Tejerina recalled that this change “is fundamental in order to favour the transition towards a development model that guarantees a sustainable future”. “Given that our future will be sustainable, or it won't”, mentioned the Minister, who recalled that this is “a great opportunity to be better managers of our environment without rejecting our well-being, in a more responsible and sustainable manner”.

In the words of Eduardo de Lecea, “the life cycle of used industrial oil is one of the best examples of circular economy, as this very hazardous and toxic waste can have infinite lives if it is suitable collected and treated, becoming a new product once it has been subjected to the regeneration process”, in line, precisely, with the Package of Measures and Plan for Action for European Circular Economy presented by the European Commission in December 2015.

After signing the document, which has also been supported by companies and entities such as ECOEMBES, ECOVIDRIO, ECOLEC, SIGNUS, SIGFITO, CICLOPLAST, Plastic Europe, the Foundation for Circular Economy and Forética, among others, the Director of Institutional Relationships and Communication of SIGAUS, Fermín Martínez de Hurtado, participated at a round table on “The role of collective systems in circular economy”, where there was a debate on the role of the Collective Systems of Extended Responsibility of the Producer, such as SIGAUS, in improving waste management, or the awareness and preparation of the sector to face the obligations derived from the plan of action implemented on a European level.

In the opinion of the European Environment Commissioner, “circular economy is an intersectoral phenomenon that aims to create ecological employment and a new generation of entrepreneurs for clean services” In this line, he encouraged Spain to work in this sense, as the “European transition towards a low-carbon economy is in progress and Spain must start down this path”.

The Ministry highlighted the idea that “in Spain, Europe will find a strong ally so that this strategy can consolidate”, with a very positive evaluation of the role played by the 55 Spanish entities adhered to the pact, “as support for the demands from society”.
