Sixth Forest in Collado Villalba

The managers of SIGAUS, accompanied by the Minister for the Environment of the Community of Madrid, Jaime González Taboada, and the Mayoress of the town, Mariola Vargas, presided an act where students from the nearby Rosa Chacel school planted several of the trees that form part of the Sixth SIGUAS Forest, under the framework of the "SIGUAS Challenge" awareness campaign, providing the Romacalderas park and the area of Prado Manzano with 1,000 new trees that contribute to the fight against climate change and reforestation in these areas.

The Chair of SIGAUS, Buenaventura González del Campo, the General director, Eduardo de Lecea and the manager of Institutional Relations and Communication of the Entity, Fermín Martínez de Hurtado, also accompanied the Town Hall Councilor for the Environment, Yolanda Martínez, as well as numerous school students that were permitted to participate in this planting and thus to celebrate European Natura 2000 Day, a European ecological network for areas of biodiversity conservation.

The Mayoress of Collado Villalba thanked the Entity responsible for the recovery and recycling of used industrial oils in Spain for providing the possibility of a new green space in the town that will hold 1,000 trees of different leafy and coniferous trees which, upon reaching maturity, will be able to contribute to the fight against climate change thanks to the absorption of CO2.

The Mayoress of Collado Villalba thanked the Entity responsible for the recovery and recycling of used industrial oils in Spain for providing the possibility of a new green space in the town.

In the words of Buenaventura González, "the intention of SIGAUS is to continue promoting this type of campaigns, because it is a reward for all citizens that, through their role, contribute to waste industrial oil being correctly managed and not having an affect on the environment".

During the act, where the Co-Director of the Sierra de Guadarrama National Park, Pedro Sanjuanbenito was also present, three caged birds were released, one kestrel and two eagles, that were recovered by the Department of the Environment and that, thanks to the children, flew freely to the amazement of all those present.

This initiative forms part of the "SIGUAS challenge" awareness campaign, an online competition hosted on the website www.hacesmasdeloquecrees.org, on the Facebook page (www.facebook.com/hacesmasconsigaus) and also available as a mobile app where, through four fun games, the users can learn about the life cycle of waste oil, opting for various prizes including the possibility of naming one of the 1,000 trees that have already been planted in the "Sixth SIGAUS Forest".

Thanks to a collaboration agreement, this new forest is already growing in a plot of 17,000 m2 located in the Romacalderas Park and another plot of 2,200 m2 located between Prado Manzano street and the road that leads towards the town of Moralzarzal, both areas including play areas and walking routes.

These new green areas in Collado Villalba join the "SIGAUS Forests" that already exist in the Madrid towns of Alcobendas, Majadahonda, Las Rozas, Coslada and Leganés and reach a total of 6,000 trees. The new trees, as on previous occasions, will be labeled with the names of the "SIGAUS Challenge" winners.
