SIGAUS and the City Council of Toledo, allies in the fight against climate change

The organisation responsible for managing used industrial oil in Spain and the City Council of the capital of Castilla- La Mancha have reached an agreement for the creation of the Ninth SIGAUS Forest, a green space of 1,000 trees that will help offset CO2 emissions, in addition to serving as a new leisure area for the city’s inhabitants. The initiative is part of the “SIGAUS Forests” reforestation project, which has planted 8,000 trees since 2012.

Toledo will be the city to host the Ninth SIGAUS Forest, an urban forest of 1,000 trees that will see the light in the spring of 2020, through the agreement of the City Council and SIGAUS, the organisation responsible for managing used industrial oil in Spain. The agreement was signed by Milagros Tolón, Mayoress-President of the City Council of Toledo and Eduardo de Lecea, General Director of SIGAUS. The forest will be located on a plot of 33,127 m2 in the neighbourhood of La Legua, near Calle Juan de Vergara, and will comprise 1,000 trees of the species Pinus halepensis (Aleppo pine), one of the most efficient in terms of offsetting greenhouse gas emissions as it can absorb 31 kg of CO2 per tree in the first 20 years, according to data provided by the Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge (MITECO). In addition to contributing to improved air quality, this new green space will provide shaded areas for everyone to enjoy.

“Agreements like the one signed with the City Council of Toledo enable us to contribute to future generations benefiting from a more sustainable environment, while also promoting its care and protection,” said Eduardo de Lecea during the signing ceremony.

““We’re all responsible for looking after the environment, both institutions and citizens,” declared the General Director of SIGAUS at the signing of this new Agreement.

As indicated in the document, the Ninth SIGAUS Forest will include two information panels that, in addition to specifying its location, will inform pedestrians of how the forest is the result of the agreement between SIGAUS and the Toledo City Council, and of the environmental benefits brought about by this urban forest. In addition to financing the planting of the stated 1,000 trees, SIGAUS will be responsible for installing a drip irrigation system to help them survive during their first years of life and will replace the specimens where necessary, at the end of the summer following the planting, until they reach the 1,000 trees initially planted.

A reforestation and environmental awareness project

In addition to ensuring correct collection and treatment of the used industrial oil generated in Spain, SIGAUS feels very strongly about raising environmental awareness among citizens. For this purpose, the entity has developed various campaigns, including this Corporate Social Responsibility project, “SIGAUS Forests”. Through this reforestation initiative that began in 2012, SIGAUS has planted 8,000 trees in the eight SIGAUS Forests that exist so far and that are located in the Madrid municipalities of Alcobendas, Majadahonda, Las Rozas, Coslada, Leganés, Collado Villalba, Colmenar Viejo and Villalbilla.

Some of these forests are already part of the healthy itineraries offered by the city councils of the municipalities in which they are located, as is the case of the First SIGAUS Forest in Alcobendas. Through the “SIGAUS Forests” project, the organisation not only contributes to offsetting CO2 emissions and fighting against climate change, but also involves citizens in the need to protect the environment, as well as providing them with new green areas that improve their quality of life.
