Professional Education Institutions join SIGAUS’ Environmental Classroom (Aula Ambiental SIGAUS)

Secondary Education centres teaching mid and higher-levels with specialisations in Automotive or Mechanical Manufacturing fill their classrooms with young individuals who in a few years will be part of the working professionals that SIGAUS seeks to educate in matters related to industrial oil waste management. This is now possible thanks to a new Collaboration Agreement signed between Madrid’s IES at La Paloma, a Spanish leader in this kind of training, and SIGAUS.

The SIGAUS Environmental Classroom (Aula Ambiental SIGAUS) keeps growing. This time, by adding a leading educational centre in matters of professional formation: IES La Paloma, in Madrid, has almost 3,000 students that every day carry out actual workshops in the 34 educational specializations offered; among which are Automotive and Vehicle Maintenance, Mechanical Manufacturing, Civil Work, Wood, Electricity and Electronics, Optics, Industrial Automation and Robotics, or Environmental Chemistry.

Thanks to the Collaboration Agreement signed by Nicolás Ruano, IES La Paloma Director, and Eduardo de Lecea, SIGAUS General Director, it will be possible to enrich this educational initiative which until now was a pending subject for the Professional Education Institutions. The contents provided to the students are highly practical and, therefore, the knowledge passed on by SIGAUS is, if possible, even more important than in the case of Universities.

The demand for professional education is constantly increasing, not only from young individuals who are finishing Compulsory High-school Education and high school and starting Mid or Higher-level education, but also from college graduates that approach the centre to update their knowledge.

In this kind of professional education institutions, students are in direct contact with lubricants and used oil waste from day one because of the training carried out both in the centre’s facilities (equipped with actual mechanical workshops, with models of motors and similar machinery to that found in any industrial facility) and externally, thus performing training in external companies and collaborating entities.

This Agreement will allow La Paloma students to receive specific training related to handling, storing, and managing industrial oil waste. It will also help train the actual teaching staff of the centre, so they are able to communicate to students the importance of appropriate management in the practice zone. Additionally, students will also be able to make a field visit to this waste's management plant belonging to the Sertego company, part of the network of companies collaborating with SIGAUS for collecting and handling used oil all over Spain, in Fuenlabrada, within the Madrid area.

The document was signed at IES La Paloma. Before that, SIGAUS’ representatives had visited the actual centre’s facilities where, both the entity's General Director and the Institutional Relations and Communication representative, Fermín Martínez de Hurtado, were able to verify the high level of training, at a practical level, students receive. Thus, confirming how important it is for young individuals to have precise technical knowledge about the hazards of used industrial oil and the specifics involved in its withdrawal and storage for later management.

“The demand for professional education is constantly increasing,” states Nicolás Ruano. “We received an increasing number of access applications, not only from young individuals who are finishing Compulsory High-school Education and high school and starting Mid or Higher-level education, but also from college graduates that approach the centre to update their knowledge in order to shape their curriculum and have access to better jobs, as the employment market is starting to be unable to absorb the large number of university graduates,” pointed out Ruano. He also added that, without a doubt, the modules with higher demand are those related to Automation and Mechanics, in which IES La Paloma is a national leader.
