SIGAUS once again meets the collection and treatment targets set for used industrial oil

The Entity recently submitted its Official Reports to the MITERD (Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge), and to the corresponding bodies of the Autonomous Communities to report on the management of used industrial oil carried out in Spain in 2022, which includes compliance, as in previous years, with the environmental goals established by regulations. As stated in these reports, 129,509 t of used oil were collected and managed to obtain new products, and 102,000 t were regenerated to produce new lubricants which, in turn, prevented the emission of more than 68,000 t of CO2 into the atmosphere.

The SIGAUS Official Reports are the main tool for informing Public Administration bodies of the management of used industrial oil, and compliance with the environmental goals established in Royal Decree 679/2006.

As stated in these reports, which were submitted at the end of March to MITERD and the corresponding bodies of the Autonomous Communities, in 2022, the industrial oil market fell by 2.1% due to the gradual decline in economic expectations and rising inflation. More specifically, SIGAUS member companies sold 288,770 t of lubricants, the majority (57%) in the automotive market, and the rest in industrial settings and other consumer sectors of these products. By origin, around 70% of the product was manufactured in Spain, while the rest was imported.

In addition to information on market placement, the reports offer a detailed analysis of the management of used industrial oil through tables, graphs and maps that show the global collection service offered by SIGAUS in Spain, even in sparsely-populated and mountainous areas or near protected spaces. According to the information provided, in 2022, 160,016 gross t of waste were collected (before deducting water and other waste), serving more than 67,000 producer establishments across nearly 4,800 municipalities. This required 172,352 collection operations, which were carried out by a network of more than 160 management companies that work with SIGAUS.

After deducting water and other sediments, the total amount of waste oil that was ultimately managed amounted to 129,509 t, all of which was recovered through various treatments that generate secondary raw materials. The vast majority of used oil was destined for regeneration, reaching a rate of 79.4% of regenerable used oil, 14 percentage points above the minimum target established in current regulations. More specifically, 102,455 t of used oil were regenerated, with which it was possible to return 64,137 t of regenerated base oils to the market for the production of new lubricants. This process also avoided the emission of 68,000 t of CO2 and saved the 30 million barrels of oil that would have been required to generate the same amount of lubricant base from initial oil refining.

In 2022, 129,509 t of waste oils were managed, all of which were recovered through various treatments that generate secondary raw materials.

The used oil which, due to its composition, could not be used for regeneration treatment (27,054 t) was used for energy recovery to obtain an industrial fuel similar to fuel oil, which is widely used in cement and paper factories and other types of industrial facilities. Thanks to this treatment it was possible to generate 23,338 t of fuel and save 24 GWh of energy, avoiding the emission of 14,241 t of CO2 into the atmosphere.

Additional information

The Official Reports also include a series of complementary reports that gather additional information from SIGAUS beyond its waste management operations. The first of these is the Follow-up and Monitoring Report of the 4th SIGAUS Prevention Business Plan, which includes the 657 new measures carried out by 159 reporting companies in 2022 with a view to minimising the impact of industrial oil on the environment. In line with its principle of transparency, the Official Reports also include information on the review and monitoring carried out during the past year to verify the statements provided by both the member companies and authorised management companies, as well as a section on the Lubricants Market Study in Spain, carried out by the independent consultancy firm, PwC, and which served to establish the market share for which SIGAUS was responsible in 2022, both from a financial and management viewpoint.

Finally, the Official Reports offer a preview of the communication actions that SIGAUS will carry out in 2023 among its different target audiences, such as campaigns in sectoral and general information media and in social networks, social responsibility initiatives or digital marketing actions, among others.
