In line with its communication strategy to promote transparency with actors and as a signatory entity of the United Nations Global Compact since 2011, SIGAUS has published its eighth Progress Report in which it gives an account of the actions carried out in 2020, in line with the Principles proposed by the United Nations. With this document, which is aligned with the United Nations Resolution on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and which links the initiatives adopted by SIGAUS with some of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2015, SIGAUS renews its commitment to sustainability, beyond its work as a waste management entity.

“With this new Progress Report, we have carried out an important exercise of transparency, before our stakeholders and society itself, on how we integrate the Principles of the Global Compact in our corporate strategy, and on how, working to guarantee our activity at all times during a year as complicated as 2020, we have continued to contribute to promoting circular and sustainable economic development and social growth, leaving no one behind”, comments Eduardo de Lecea, General Director of SIGAUS, in his letter of renewal of commitment included in the report.

One of the pillars of SIGAUS activity during 2020 has been prevention, as evidenced by the more than 6,700 actions whose development and implementation has been promoted by SIGAUS since 2010 (570 of these actions were declared in 2020) aimed at extending the useful life of lubricants, developing less polluting oils, as well as marketing lubricants whose formulas include regenerated base lubricants. These measures have enabled to reduce the amount of used oil generated and its adverse impact on our environment.

The transparency that SIGAUS offers to its adhered companies, Public Administration Bodies, and other stakeholders is also evident in the Progress Report. In this way, the document reflects how in 2020, 25 adhered companies were audited, thus reaching 58.7% of the total lubricating oil placed on the market in 2019 and 64.2% of the total placed on the market in 2018. Similarly, last year a verification exercise was carried out on the legal documents of 15 management companies to verify the traceability of waste.

With this new Report, SIGAUS shows how it integrates the Principles of the Global Compact into its corporate strategy, thus helping to promote circular and sustainable economic development.

Likewise, this Report reflects the adoption of other measures relating to strict compliance with national and international legislation, policies for attracting and retaining talent, employee non-discrimination, and the fight against corruption, all thanks to the rigorous application of its Code of Ethics and Competition by all SIGAUS employees and Corporate Governance.

As regards environmental protection, the Report highlights how in 2020, through its work, SIGAUS was able to serve more than 67,500 establishments that produced used oil, establishments that were distributed among more than 4,800 municipalities that encompass more than 98% of the Spanish population, through almost 162.000 collection operations. This service was possible thanks to the extensive SIGAUS logistics network that includes 160 management companies and 199 management facilities.

In addition, in 2020 we achieved one of the highest rates of regenerated waste in recent years: a total of 88,373 tonnes, 73.89% of the total renewable used oils, thus exceeding, by 8 percentage points, the minimum established by law (65%). The regenerated waste was reused following the basic principles of the Circular Economy. Specifically, in 2020, it was possible to return to the market more than 55,000 tonnes of new lubricants which could serve to fill the crankcase of 13 million passenger cars and which prevented the emission of a total of 58,945 tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere.
