SIGAUS renews its commitment to the SDGs and the Ten Principles of the United Nations Global Compact

The Entity has published its seventh Progress Report, a document that details the measures adopted in 2019 to align its strategies and operations with the Ten Principles proposed by the United Nations Global Compact, relating to human rights, labour, the environment and the fight against corruption. For the second year running, the report also details the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with which each of the measures adopted by SIGAUS is identified.

In 2011, SIGAUS joined the UN Global Compact as a signatory entity. This international instrument was established in 1999, thanks to the initiative of the United Nations Secretary General, Kofi Annan; it demonstrates the company’s commitment to sustainability beyond the work that it already carries out in the field of waste management.

As it does each year, and in an exercise of transparency towards stakeholders and society, the organisation has published its seventh Progress Report: a document that, as an active member of this international initiative, it is making public with the aim of detailing the measures adopted in 2019, to integrate the 10 Principles enacted by the UN Global Compact into its work, which seek to contribute to promoting more inclusive, innovative and sustainable development.

“Thanks to the renewal, one more year, of our support of the Ten Principles of the United Nations, we commit to continuing to dedicate all our efforts to working towards the progress and reconstruction that we want and, more than ever, need: that which helps us overcome the impact of the health crisis and to rebuild our battered economy under the premises of sustainability and respect for the environment,” says Eduardo de Lecea, General Director of SIGAUS, in the commitment renewal letter included in the report.

One of the key areas of the measures explained in this Report relate to prevention: among the essential pillars on which waste management is based and a fundamental tool to guarantee a healthy environment, free from hazardous substances. In this sense, since 2010, SIGAUS has been working with member companies through Business Prevention Plans, giving rise to the implementation of more than 6,000 actions aimed at promoting innovation in the development of less polluting and long-life lubricants to reduce the amount of used oil generated.

In labour matters, the new Progress Report gives an account of the measures adopted by SIGAUS to attract and retain the talent of its human capital, avoiding discrimination against employees and fighting corruption, measures that are included in its Code of Ethics and Competence, and that are rigorously complied with by all employees and Corporate Governance.

One of SIGAUS' greatest contributions to society relates to environmental protection, as shown by its figures for emission savings and efficient use of raw materials. Thus, the 2019 Progress Report analyses how last year, the SIGAUS network of management companies served more than 70,000 establishments that produce used oil in more than 4,800 municipalities throughout Spain, including high mountain areas, with difficult access or close to protected spaces. Almost 160,000 gross tonnes of this waste were collected in these establishments, with more than 93,000 being regenerated, a figure that represents 73% of the regenerable used oil collected, and is one of the highest rates in the last decade. As detailed in the Report, this treatment gave rise to significant environmental and economic benefits, such as savings of around 29 million barrels of oil thanks to the generation of lubricants from regenerated base oils, thus promoting the circularity of resources within the production chain and the saving of almost 65,000 tonnes of CO2 released into the atmosphere.
