The SIGAUS Environmental Classroom kicks off the school year with courses at the UPM and UCM

The SIGAUS Environmental Classroom has started the 2024-25 school year by taking part in the Master programmes in Circular Economy at the Polytechnic University of Madrid and Occupational Risk Prevention at the Complutense University of Madrid. The two sessions, held on 26 September and 2 October, respectively, had a large number of students in attendance and represent the continuity of this training project in which the company is raising awareness of the importance of managing waste oil, a potentially polluting waste that is common in many industrial and automotive sectors, and which can be reused and transformed into new products.

The seventh school year of the SIGAUS Environmental Classroom has got off to a good start by offering its training courses in two of Madrid's most important universities. On 26 September, a group of 19 students from UPM’s Master in Circular Economy, one of the most established in the field, attended the training. The students came from backgrounds such as environmental science, mechanical engineering and chemistry, and were particularly interested in the physico-chemical processes involved in converting waste oil into new products.

The SIGAUS Environmental Classroom has provided UPM and UCM students with important training for managing industrial waste oils in their future careers.

Wednesday 2 October was the next stop for the SIGAUS Environmental Classroom at the UCM Faculty of Psychology, where 20 students from the Master’s Degree in Occupational Risk Prevention expressed their curiosity about the management of a waste found in many business sectors. The session covered the importance of responsible industrial waste oil management in the workplace, highlighting the applicable regulations and the environmental benefits of its proper management.

Launched in 2018, the SIGAUS Environmental Classroom aims to train university and vocational students in environmental, mechanical and engineering subjects on sustainable industrial waste oil management. Through these courses, SIGAUS aims to train future professionals in the proper management of this waste, thus transferring its knowledge to those who will be responsible for ensuring proper environmental management in many different professional fields.

The sessions focus on an understanding of current regulations, the concept of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) and the processes that enable the recovery of waste oil. By participating in these two postgraduate programmes at UPM and UCM, SIGAUS is starting off the 2024-25 school year reaffirming its commitment to education and training. In November, a new training course will be held as part of the partnership between SIGAUS and another of Madrid’s major universities: the Autonomous University and its Master's Degree in Waste and Wastewater Management for Resource Recovery, sponsored by the Faculty of Science.
