The SIGAUS Environmental Classroom is present in two of Madrid’s leading universities

Continuing with its educational work to raise awareness of how used industrial waste oil is managed, SIGAUS gave its training this week at the Autonomous University of Madrid (UAM) and at the Polytechnic University (UPM), two of the capital’s leading universities. In addition to the theoretical training provided by SIGAUS, the students of the UAM's Master's Degree in Waste and Wastewater Management for the Recycling of Resources had the opportunity to visit the SERTEGO waste oil treatment plant in Fuenlabrada (Madrid) in order to learn first-hand about the regeneration process of this waste.

The SIGAUS Environmental Classroom is a training project launched in 2018 by the Industrial Oils EPRS which some of the main Spanish universities and educational centres are affiliated to, where students with professional profiles related to the use of lubricants are trained. The purpose of this SIGAUS educational activity is to train future managers to properly manage the industrial waste oil generated by their work activity, thus contributing to the protection of the environment.

For the fifth consecutive year, SIGAUS has offered training to the students of the UAM’s Master’s Degree in Waste and Wastewater Management for the Recycling of Resources. This postgraduate programme at the Autonomous University of Madrid provides students with specialised knowledge in waste management, transforming them into expert professionals in applying the Circular Economy model to this field. The Head of Institutional Relations and Communication at SIGAUS, Ainhöa Lizarbe, explained to the Master’s students how industrial waste oil is managed in Spain and what types of treatments it undergoes to transform it from waste into a resource.

Thanks to the SIGAUS Environmental Classroom training, students at UAM and UPM can learn more about how industrial waste oil is managed.

To complete this theoretical training, the Autonomous University of Madrid students went on a field trip to SERTEGO’s facilities in Fuenlabrada (Madrid), one of the main industrial waste oil management companies in Spain. At its facilities, students were able to see first-hand the regeneration process to which the waste is subjected to convert it into bases for the manufacture of new lubricants, industrial fuel for cement plants and asphalt bitumen, recovering 100% of the waste and transforming it into new products.

This week, the SIGAUS Environmental Classroom also visited the third year students of the Environmental Technologies Engineering Degree at the Polytechnic University of Madrid (UPM). They were able to learn more about the regulatory context that covers the management of industrial waste oil, as well as the concept of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) and its implications for manufacturers when launching a product on the market. The students also learned how waste oil can be fully recovered and used as a raw material to manufacture new products, thereby avoiding its negative impact on the environment and serving as a good example of a Circular Economy that works.
