The Polytechnic University of Madrid (UPM) joins the SIGAUS Environmental Classroom with its Official Master’s in Circular Economy

The SIGAUS Environmental Classroom continues to expand. On this occasion, with a new centre with which to collaborate in specialised training: the Polytechnic University of Madrid (UPM), through its Official Master’s in Circular Economy, which is taught from the School of Forest Engineering and Natural Resources and which has just started its second edition. “Having the specialisation of organisations such as SIGAUS available to us is essential when we tell our students that it’s high time we stopped using the word ‘waste’ and replaced it with the term ‘resource’. That is the essence of the Circular Economy”, highlights the Coordinator of the Master’s, Sigfredo Ortuño.

“Working in the area of the Circular Economy is already a social necessity and that’s precisely how we’ve interpreted it at the Polytechnic University of Madrid (UPM). For this reason, and also because we are aware that training in this area affects all disciplines and specialties, we are committed to this Master’s. Because it is essential for our engineers, technicians and professionals in general, in all areas”, says José Vicente López, Professor of the Official Master's in Circular Economy that the School of Forest Engineering and Natural Resources of the UPM is offering for the second year in a row.

Thus, this new edition of the Master’s has started with the expert teaching assistance of SIGAUS, that has shown students how the proper management of used oil from the industrial, machinery and vehicle engine sectors, among many others, is a perfect example of the Circular Economy: its 100% recovery makes it a very important source of raw materials, both for the manufacture of new lubricants and for use as an alternative fuel due to its high calorific value.

According to López, “SIGAUS’ vision in this Master’s is essential to us, as it is the vision of professionals who work closely with waste and its management, and are aware of the challenges and problems that future workers in these sectors will have to face, who will come out of the course much better prepared to be part of a company or an organisation and apply all that knowledge”.

This new edition of the Master’s has started with the expert teaching assistance of SIGAUS, that has shown students how the proper management of used oil is a perfect example of the Circular Economy: its 100% recovery makes it a very important source of raw materials, both for the manufacture of new lubricants and for use as an alternative fuel due to its high calorific value.

In the words of the Coordinator of the Master’s, Sigfredo Ortuño, “the word ‘waste’ must become a thing of the past and be replaced by the term ‘resource’. Teaching students to banish this concept and transform it into that of ‘waste recovery’ is a priority, and that is what we seek with this Master’s, to convey to them that waste from used oils, or any other by-product, must be reused, because if we don't, we will have a resource supply problem, which will become increasingly more frequent”.

For this reason, Ortuño points out, “the fact that organisations such as SIGAUS, that recycle and collect waste that is going to be transformed into new and valuable resources after proper management, are working with us is paramount and a major added value to convey to students that we’re not talking about waste, but about a valid resource that cannot be squandered. That is the essence of the Circular Economy”.

One of these students, Juan Martínez Caballero, agrees on the need to complete his training with this type of knowledge, as in his degree “it was only covered in a generic and superficial way, due to the great number of students and large amount of subjects taken”. “Thanks to this type of specialisation, we can learn much more in-depth, and from the professionals themselves, about aspects relating to sustainability and the Circular Economy that we didn’t know about until now,” he points out.

“I believe that this training opens up our vision in terms of everything that is being done and what remains to be done, the challenges that will arise when we enter the job market and the extensive development and professional opportunities that are increasingly emerging in these areas”, concludes Martínez.

The SIGAUS Environmental Classroom is contributing to this and is doing so thanks to the collaboration of more and more centres. In addition to the UPM, the Classroom has formalised in recent weeks another recent adhesion, the University of Murcia (UMU), through a new General Protocol for Action signed by the Rector of the UMU, José Luján Alcaraz, and Eduardo de Lecea, General Director of SIGAUS.
