SIGAUS continues to provide support to social entities to mitigate the effects of the health crisis

SIGAUS is continuing to focus on its work on social action, given the serious effects of the coronavirus health crisis on entities that work with groups at risk of exclusion. A pandemic that is already having a huge economic, but above all, social impact and that is endangering the work of organizations dedicated to supporting sick children and people with disabilities, among other sectors. For this reason, SIGAUS continues to support the work of these organizations, now more than ever, with a contribution of 12,000 euros to help meet the new needs that have arisen during these months.

Those people served by the organizations with which SIGAUS has collaborated since 2018 –Dravet Syndrome Foundation, Porque Viven and APADIS– are currently considered at high risk, and the need to keep them safe has become the highest priority during these months. At the same time, the survival of some of these organizations’ most important projects, aimed at improving the quality of life and health of these groups, is in question. For this reason, SIGAUS continues to support them, in the belief that, now more than ever, the work carried out by these entities must not stop.

During this crisis, those in need of help, such as sick children or people with disabilities who depend on support in their day-to-day lives, have faced greater barriers, and even isolation when trying to obtain aid or even gain access to health services, in addition to the risk of exclusion and lack of opportunities that they usually suffer.

The work carried out by these organizations must not stop now and SIGAUS is ensuring this by covering their new needs in the face of the crisis, among them an increase in pharmaceutical spending, safety and hygiene, protective material and the adaptation of their areas and facilities.

In this respect, SIGAUS has signed new collaboration agreements with these organizations to provide financial support and in terms of dissemination and raising awareness of their projects, thus covering the new needs that have arisen during the crisis, related to, for example, an increase in pharmaceutical spending, greater safety and hygiene requirements, the purchase of prophylactic and protective materials, and the adaptation of some of their areas and facilities.

Positive impact in the face of the Covid-19 challenge

Thanks to the contribution of 12,000 euros by SIGAUS, these organizations will be able to continue with their activities, which are more necessary than ever at this time. In the case of APADIS, this financial support will be used to remedy the lack of material and the high costs associated with an increase in hygiene and cleaning tasks in services such as Early Childhood Care, its Special Employment Centre, its Day Centre and residential and sheltered housing services, through which the organization cares for a total of about 600 people.

“With the support of SIGAUS, we can ensure that the people with whom APADIS works will have facilities and a safe and healthy home; and that the professionals who care for them 24 hours a day, 7 days a week will have guaranteed access to prophylaxis, safety and risk prevention measures against the spread of COVID-19", the organization commented.

In the case of Porque Viven, this support will help the organization to continue with its accompaniment programmes for children who need palliative care and their families in their own home, with the aim of improving their quality of life. In addition, support has been given to its respite care services for the caregivers and relatives of these sick children, in order to mitigate physical and psychological stress, providing them time for self-care and work-life balance through the help of the Porque Viven nursing team at their homes.

For the Dravet Syndrome Foundation, the collaboration of SIGAUS is essential when it comes to maintaining and improving services for people with this disease and their families, as well as supporting its respite programmes for caregivers, psychosocial care for siblings of people with the syndrome, its Complete Genome Sequencing programme (which offers a genomic test to undiagnosed patients of any age who show symptoms compatible with this syndrome), and of course, research into this rare disease characterized by prolonged seizures, behavioural disorders and the autism spectrum, or a delay in the development of motor skills and language, among other symptoms. Currently, treatment options for Dravet syndrome are limited, and the constant care required by a person suffering from it seriously affects the quality of life of the patient and the family.
