SIGAUS lends its support for environmental journalism once again this year with its involvement in APIA’s 14th National Conference

SIGAUS Managing Director Eduardo de Lecea met with APIA Chairwoman María García at the SIGAUS head offices to sign a new Partnership Agreement in support of the 14th Spanish Environmental Journalism Conference, scheduled to be held this year in Madrid on 22 and 23 November under the banner "Environmental communication: a global health issue".

For the fourth consecutive year, SIGAUS will lend its support to the Spanish Conference organised by the Spanish Environmental Journalists Association (APIA): the 14th edition of one of the foremost environmental journalism gatherings, a biennial event that draws together journalists, communications professionals, environmentalists, engineers, communicators and environmental educators, to name but a few, with a view to opening a debate that examines the current situation in this field and, above all, to put conclusions and possible solutions to the main challenges of environmental communication on the table.

This year's edition is set to be an open forum to discuss the most salient topics of 2020, a year in which, after enduring an unprecedented health crisis with devastating social, environmental and economic consequences, we finally had proof of what scientists were warning about for years: the intertwined relationship linking human and environmental health. “Science has shown that without healthy ecosystems, human health will also suffer”, explains APIA to illustrate the theme chosen for the 14th edition of its conference, “Environmental communication: a global health issue”.

The APIA Chairwoman voiced her gratitude to entities such as SIGAUS who “recognise and value the importance of this profession in promoting awareness of sustainability and environmental preservation”.

As Eduardo de Lecea puts it, “there is no denying that aspects as relevant as the relationship between human health and environmental health must be raised in the current public debate in general, and in the media in particular, and to this end the role of environmental journalists and their work to promote environmental awareness as essential tools is one of our greatest commitments as an organisation in charge of properly handling hazardous waste such as used industrial oil”. “Without these professionals, our task of conveying these messages to society, which must be increasingly educated and informed in this area, would not be possible”, explained the SIGAUS Managing Director when signing the agreement.

“Whenever we damage our ecosystems, we are also harming our own health, and the global pandemic is the best example of this. A healthy nature protects us. Failure to do so will have consequences such as what we have just experienced”, recalled the APIA Chairwoman on World Environment Day celebrated on 5 June, who referred, during the meeting with SIGAUS, to the vital role that organisations and companies play in supporting environmental journalism. “Because environmental awareness cannot be achieved without rigorous and quality information”, she pointed out.

The APIA Conference will be inaugurated by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for the Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge, Teresa Ribera, and feature a keynote address by the Director of the Department of Public Health and Environment at the World Health Organization (WHO), Dr María Neira. The conference's second day will also feature a talk by journalist Iñaki Gabilondo.

Over the course of these two intense days, attendees will be able to debate and share their views on issues such as renewable energies, energy transition, biodiversity conservation, environmental pollution, the circular economy, food and health, and the conclusions of the United Nations Summit on Climate Change (COP 26), which will be held a few days earlier in Glasgow (Scotland), after having been postponed in 2020 due to the pandemic.
