New agreement between the Community of Madrid and SIGAUS to expand environmental training in vocational training institutes
The collaboration agreement signed in 2020 with the Regional Ministry of Education, Science and Universities of the Community of Madrid has been renewed by SIGAUS for three more years. This agreement, which provides a framework to bring the ‘SIGAUS Environmental Classroom’ training project to Vocational Training Institutes throughout the region, aims to train future professionals in specialties related to automotive and industry in the management of industrial waste oils.

The partnership, which lasts until 2027, will enable vocational training students to learn about the correct management of industrial waste oils, a hazardous waste that requires proper treatment to prevent its environmental impact. Beyond preparing students to play a key role in the industrial oil value chain, the project also aims to communicate the environmental and economic benefits of the Circular Economy.
Through this training programme, students can learn how to properly manage this waste, the corresponding environmental regulations and the processes used to convert waste oil into new products. Along with classroom training, the agreement includes the organisation of informative sessions with visits to industrial waste oil management facilities that are part of the management company network working with SIGAUS.
Furthermore, through SIGAUS' digital Environmental Classroom, students and teachers have an e-learning space to complement on-site training. This training platform has a personalised private area for each centre containing a range of teaching resources such as videos and infographics, specific downloadable material and a self-assessment questionnaire on the subject being taught, among other things.
More than 2,200 students from various specialties
The SIGAUS Environmental Classroom training is aimed at students of varying levels and education specialisations, including a range of engineering degrees (industrial, forestry, chemical, materials, environmental), motor and automotive design specialisations, transport and logistics, and vocational training degrees (automotive, mechanical manufacturing, electromechanical and railway, among others). It is also geared towards students of master’s degrees in waste management, Circular Economy or logistics and transport. Since it was launched, the SIGAUS Environmental Classroom has trained over 2,200 students, in collaboration with more than 20 universities and vocational training centres throughout Spain, providing them with educational tools and resources aligned with labour market demands.

Visit to the IES San Blas
To celebrate the renovation of the agreement between the Community of Madrid and SIGAUS, we visited the IES San Blas de Madrid, one of the most important vocational training centres in the capital. Madrid’s Regional Minister of Education, Science and Universities, Emilio Viciana, and the CEO of SIGAUS, Eduardo de Lecea, accompanied by the Director General of Secondary Education, Vocational Training and Special Schemes, Mª Luz Rodríguez de Llera, the Director of the Madrid Capital Territorial Area, Coral Báez, and the SIGAUS Director of Communication and IR, Ainhöa Lizarbe, were welcomed by David González, Principal of IES San Blas.
The IES San Blas leadership team presented the school’s facilities, including the area where students carry out oil changes, diagnosis and painting of vehicles, and the space dedicated to waste storage, where waste is classified according to its type and prepared for subsequent collection by an authorised waste manager. Afterwards, they visited the centre's ‘Self-Sustainable Classroom’, which has two wind turbines and solar panels.
Eduardo de Lecea, CEO of SIGAUS, voiced his satisfaction with the agreement, stating “We are very happy and grateful for the renovation of this agreement with the Community of Madrid, through which we have expanded the possibility of providing training on the management of industrial waste oils in Vocational Training Institutes throughout the region”. It’s not just about having more skilled professionals, but also more environmentally-aware ones. Because both are crucial for the next generations to face the challenges ahead.
