The SIGAUS Environmental Classroom continues to grow and the new 2020-2021 academic year has begun with a new partnership, this time with the public administration. The authority in question is the Regional Ministry of Education and Youth of the Community of Madrid, whose Minister, Enrique Ossorio, met with the General Manager of SIGAUS, Eduardo de Lecea, on 18 September to sign a new Agreement that renders a further boost to this training project, launched by SIGAUS in 2015, with the aim of providing training in waste management to future professionals in the production sectors that require lubricants for their operation, such as car production, mechanical manufacturing, and various other engineering specialties, among others.

SIGAUS, now with the support of the Community of Madrid and its Regional Ministry of Education, will be able to reinforce training and environmental awareness in vocational training, among students looking to start professional careers in the sectors that are most affected by the use of industrial oils and, therefore, the subsequent management of the waste they generate.

This agreement will reinforce environmental training and awareness in Vocational Training among future professionals in the automotive and mechanical manufacturing sectors.

The SIGAUS Environmental Classroom has always focused on Vocational Training when conducting this type of technical training, since it is very focused on practical aspects and enables students to come into contact with this type of hazardous waste in their work placements, inside and outside the centres. Moreover, according to data from the Regional Ministry itself, the number of vocational training students continues to grow and, for the 2020/21 academic year, there will be 111,867, 6.5% more than last year, a record figure for this type of education.

With the signing of this agreement, SIGAUS will be able to reach a greater number of students at the vocational training centres of the Community of Madrid that teach Intermediate and Advanced vocational training cycles in the field of transport and vehicle maintenance, providing more in-depth knowledge about the environmental impact of the waste generated in this type of activity and its proper collection, storage and treatment.

These training hours given by SIGAUS (always adapted to the needs of each centre and the different levels and specialities of the students) will help promote the protection and conservation of the environment, as well as the balance between economic progress and the rational use of resources and waste through the Circular Economy.

Support for teachers and students

In addition to the training sessions, masterclasses and technical visits to the waste regeneration centres, so that students can see first-hand how this process works, SIGAUS will provide teaching, audiovisual and reference materials to the centres, teachers and students who request it, to expand on the knowledge acquired on the management of used oil.

The SIGAUS Environmental Classroom also provides training to teachers responsible for courses regarding the use and impact of lubricants and their waste; not only in the classroom but also through extra-curricular activities that the centres offer, both to teachers and to students in order to reinforce their vocation and awareness in environmental and sustainability matters.
