Villanueva del Pardillo to have a new ‘SIGAUS Forest’ with 1,000 trees
The Town Council of Villanueva del Pardillo and SIGAUS have signed a collaboration agreement to create the ‘Fourteenth SIGAUS Forest’ on a municipal plot of more than 12,000 m² located at Calle Camilo José Cela. The project involves the planting of 1,000 trees that will become the municipality’s new green area and contribute to offsetting CO₂ emissions. The organisation will also develop an environmental education programme in collaboration with several schools in the municipality, which will allow sixth-year primary school pupils to name the trees planted.

The agreement, signed by the Town Council of Villanueva del Pardillo and SIGAUS, provides for the creation of a forest comprising 500 stone pines (Pinus pinea), 250 holm oaks (Quercus ilex) and 250 cork oaks (Quercus suber). These are native species adapted to the Mediterranean climate that will help improve air quality, capture CO₂ and generate new habitats for local wildlife.
To ensure the success of the forest, SIGAUS will finance both the supply of trees and the planting work, as well as the installation of a drip irrigation network. SIGAUS will also be responsible for any replanting required following the first summer period after planting, to complete the number of trees donated to the municipality.
Meanwhile, the Town Council will be responsible for providing the water connection required for the installation of the irrigation network and, once planting is complete, will take on tree maintenance services, as well as promoting the initiative through its usual communication channels. “According to Eurostat, three out of four people live in urban areas in Europe, and it is in these environments that green areas play an essential role in mitigating the effects of climate change and improving the quality of life of their inhabitants. With this new SIGAUS Forest, we are continuing to expand our urban forest project and bring nature closer to citizens”, said Eduardo de Lecea, CEO of SIGAUS.
The Third Deputy Mayor and Councillor for the Environment of Villanueva del Pardillo, Raúl Jiménez Rodríguez, highlighted that “this agreement with SIGAUS allows us to transform a green area into a multifunctional forest, which will be a new gathering place for walking, playing sports and enjoying nature. We are working towards a healthier and more sustainable municipality, which complements the work we’ve been doing to increase and care for our urban woodland.”

A forest for enjoyment... and learning
The project also includes an educational component as SIGAUS will provide training sessions on the proper management of industrial waste oils in several primary schools in the municipality. These sessions, designed in the style of an ‘escape-room’ learning activity, combine information and participatory activities to raise awareness about environmental protection among young people. Each pupil will also be able to name one of the trees by participating in the ‘Give it life with art’ drawing competition, which will help strengthen their emotional bond with the municipality’s new green area.
The agreement includes the installation of information signs explaining the project and the species planted. Also, each tree will have a biodegradable cork label with the name chosen by the pupils participating in the drawing competition and the winners of the environmental awareness campaign to be launched by SIGAUS, linking citizen participation with the creation of the new green area. Each tree will then be geolocated and photographed, to allow a virtual tour of the trees via a specific website dedicated to the forest.
The ‘SIGAUS Forests’ project is an urban reforestation initiative that has already planted 13,000 trees since 2012 in different municipalities. With this ‘Fourteenth SIGAUS Forest’ in Villanueva del Pardillo, the project is incorporating a new green area that will contribute to offsetting CO₂ emissions and improving the quality of life of citizens.
