The Eleventh SIGAUS Forest will grow in Boadilla del Monte, with 1000 new trees to fight against climate change
The Entity and the city council of Boadilla have signed an agreement for the creation of the Eleventh SIGAUS Forest, a new green space of 3.2 hectares and 1000 trees that will contribute to regenerate the mass of ash trees in the natural area of Vega del Arroyo de la Fresnera (Monte Sur, Boadilla), and to fight against climate change. The initiative is part of the 'SIGAUS Forests' project, which, once this forest is completed, will have planted 11,000 trees located in different municipalities around Madrid.

In line with its reforestation and environmental awareness policies, SIGAUS has signed an agreement for the planting of 1000 trees in the Madrid municipality of Boadilla del Monte. The signing ceremony was attended by Javier Úbeda, Mayor of the town and Eduardo de Lecea, General Director of SIGAUS, and took place in the Bird House of the Infante Don Luis Palace.
This new green space will be home to 1000 ash trees (Fraxinus angustifolia) that will contribute to regenerate the mass of ash trees in Vega Sur de la Fresnera (Monte Sur, Boadilla). This species has a great power to absorb greenhouse gases as, according to data from the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, it is capable of absorbing up to 90 kg of CO2 per tree in the first 20 years. The forest, which will occupy 3.2 hectares, will be planted in the coming weeks.
‘Many towns around large cities are growing in size and population over the years. We have to keep up with this growth with the provision of green infrastructures to maintain biodiversity, absorb greenhouse gases and provide the population with spaces to enjoy and raise awareness around nature, a task to which we contribute through our SIGAUS Forests’, says Eduardo de Lecea, the General Director of SIGAUS.

The Eleventh SIGAUS Forest will include several identifying signs that will delimit its geographical location and also provide information on the characteristics of the species that make up the forest, as well as the environmental benefits that this green space will provide.
In order to guarantee the trees’ first years of life and their maintenance, SIGAUS will provide the forest with a drip irrigation network. The Entity will also be responsible for any replanting required following the first summer period after planting.
Environmental awareness also on social media
The trees of the Eleventh SIGAUS Forest will be christened by the first 1000 participants in the ‘Forest Challenge’ communication campaign posted on SIGAUS’ social networks. This initiative, in which users join in the reforesting of natural areas virtually is helping to publicise the ‘SIGAUS Forest’ project and raise awareness about environmental protection on the Internet.
The trees of the 11th SIGAUS Forest will be labelled with the winning names soon, and photographed and geolocated, so that they can also be visited online through the SIGAUS Forests website: www.hacesmasdeloquecrees.org.
