The Red Sea Auditorium in the Oceanogràfic de Valencia was the scenario, on November 15th and 16th, for the 12th Edition of the National Congress on Environmental Journalism, organised by the Association of Environmental Information Journalists (APIA) and inaugurated, with the presence of 200 attendees, by the president of the Generalitat, Ximo Puig, the mayor of Valencia, Joan Ribó, the chair of the APIA, Clara Navío and the chair of the Unió de Periodistes Valencians, Noa de la Torre, among other personalities. The chair of publications and principal researcher of the Worldwatch Institute, Gary T. Gardner, offered the inaugural conference. Coinciding with the celebration of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP23) in Bonn (Germany), some of the highlighted conclusions in the debates at the Congress referred to the fact that the urgency to stop climate change is not reflected in the media and political agenda, and a call was made for the world leaders to “commit” to this issue.

Yet another year, SIGAUS has supported the biennial meeting organised by the Association of Environmental Information Journalists (APIA) with the objective of promoting and raising awareness in society and the media of the importance of protecting the environment and the presence of this type of information in the media and the national and international political agenda.

Thus, climate change “requires global action” and “staying informed” as “it is necessary to explain the reasons in the media and to create awareness”, agreed the experts who were present in Valencia. This shows the importance of the role played by journalists and the communication media when “generating social awareness that leads to action”, highlighted the Chair of APIA, Clara Navío, who advocated for “working with professional capacity to make this phenomenon more understandable”.
For his part, during the round table on adaptation to climate change through Circular Economy, the Director of Institutional Relationships and Communication of SIGAUS, Fermín Martínez de Hurtado, underlined the Entity’s commitment to the fight against this phenomenon, which is articulated through the policies of prevention, the regeneration of used industrial oil and the actions for social responsibility in order to compensate the emissions of CO2 and which translates to the planting of 6,000 trees and over 170,000 square meters of new urban green areas that have been a reality since 2012.
As part of SIGAUS’ commitment, he highlighted the policy for the regeneration of used industrial oil which has been applied since its creation over a decade ago, and which has led to reduced emissions of 2.8 million tonnes of CO2, as a consequence of not using petroleum for the production of lubricants and of using the used oil collected for fuel, over 1.4 million tonnes since 2007.
During the Congress, which would be watched live through streaming and social media, there was a debate on the social phenomenon of climate migration, the aspects related to food, water resources and agriculture, and how these are affected by climate change, the urban model and the status of climate change policies with issues such as the Law on Energy Transition and Climate Change which is being prepared by the Government of Spain.
Finally, the event was concluded by the Minister of Agriculture, Environment, Climate Change and Rural Development of the Generalitat de Valencia, Elena Cebrián, who highlighted the importance of awareness and promotion by both communication media and by organisations and entities that, like SIGAUS, work to inform society and citizens of the importance of this topic, not only through their work of recovering and reusing waste, but also through different formats such as social media or online campaigns, among other measures.
