Used oil producers, as car repairs, must extract and store waste preventing leakage and spillage due to its high polluting power, and delivering it to an authorised manager.

Used oil extraction and storage

According to Law 22/2011 on waste and contaminated soils, used industrial oil producers, as car repairs, must meet some legal requirements when dealing with this hazardous waste. First, the shop must register as a Hazardous Waste Producer (or Small Producer, depending on the annual amount generated) in the register of the corresponding Autonomous Community.

Additionally, if you are a car repair, you must take into account the following requirements:

Used oil must be correctly extracted and stored in adequate containers with identification labels to avoid confusion with other substances or any other kinds of waste.

Once stored, used oil must not be mixed with water or any other non-oily waste.

Car repairs, must have facilities that permit the storage of used oil until its collection and that are accessible to the vehicles responsible for this. Similarly, storage containers must be properly closed to prevent leakage or spillage, specially underground ones.

Within a maximum of six months, car repairs must contact an authorised manager to collect and transport waste to a specialised treatment centre.

Additionally, it is forbidden to dispose used oil into water or soil, as well as any waste treatment producing an atmospheric pollution over the level specified in the legislation on protection of atmospheric ambient air pollution.

Used oil in Spain
