SIGAUS complies with its ecological objectives in 2014, for the eighth consecutive year
Thanks to the work carried out by SIGAUS, during 2014 126,089 tonnes of waste industrial oils generated in Spain have been recovered, which is 45.30% of the oil placed on the Spanish market by lubricant manufacturers adhered to SIG. 100% of the waste industrial oil collected was evaluated, with 69.92% of the same being destined to regeneration of the part of the waste that is considered to be reclaimable. This figure confirms compliance with the Spanish regulations related to waste industrial oils, that require that a minimum of 65% of this waste product must be destined to regeneration processes.

During 2014, SIGAUS provided coverage of the introduction to the Spanish market of a total of 278,341 tonnes of industrial oil, through 190 companies adhered to the responsibility of marketing these products in various economic sectors. This volume implied 3.6% more than in 2013, and, applying the generation estimate for waste oils that is generally admitted, over 120,000 tonnes of waste for recovery would have been generated.
At the end of the year, the network of management companies that collaborate with the IMS and that operate in the various phases of the process, such as collection, transport, storage, analysis, pre-treatment and final treatment, registered (through the Information Technology System created by SIGAUS and that controls waste management at national level) the recovery of 126,089 tonnes. This volume implies 45.30% of the quantity mentioned as placed on the market, which would confirm compliance with the recovery objective of 95% of the waste oils generated, as is established in article 8 of Royal Decree 679/2006, given that the generation coefficient for used oil obtained is superior to the 40-44% admitted by the environmental authorities.

100% of the waste industrial oil collected in 2014 was evaluated, with 69.92% of the same being destined to regeneration.

The following objective complied with by SIGAUS corresponds to the valuation of the entirety of the collected waste oil, given that the 126,089 tonnes (100% of the waste collected) was destined to the processes of evaluation. On the other hand, a total of 85,438 tonnes of waste industrial oil were destined to regeneration, of a total of 122,203 tonnes of collected waste oil considered to be reclaimable (which excludes certain types of used oils for which, due to their high content of impurities, the regeneration is not a viable process from a technical or environmental point of view). This figure implies a regeneration of 69.92% (superior quantity to the 65% indicated by law), thus SIGAUS has achieved compliance with another of the required ecological objectives in the year 2014).
Environmental advantages
Thanks to this treatment of regeneration, the approximately 57,000 tonnes of lubricants have been returned to the market. This could be used to change the oil in approximately 14 million vehicles. Also, this treatment has made it possible to avoid the emission of approximately 250,000 tonnes of CO2, equivalent to the absorption of a forest of 487 km2, similar in size to the municipal area of Valdepeñas (Ciudad Real). For its part, the used oil that could not be reclaimed and was destined to energy evaluation processes allowed for the generation of 36,000 tonnes of processed fuel, which would contain energy equivalent to that consumed annually in approximately 100,000 average Spanish homes.
