Managing waste oil, subject of the news on Balearic television

Ainhöa Lizarbe, Director of Institutional Relations and Communication at SIGAUS and GENCI, participated in a report on the Balearic television IB3 TV, in which she highlighted how in 2022 more than 2,600 tons of this waste were treated in the archipelago, while also commenting on what the waste oil management process is like and what environmental and economic benefits it involves. The audiovisual piece showed how an oil change is done in a mechanic workshops and how the waste is collected, as well as the inside of a waste oil storage plant.

The Balearic television channel IB3 TV has reported on the management of waste oil in the region, where in 2022 2,657 tonnes were managed thanks to the work of SIGAUS. This required carrying out 4,939 collection operations in 63 Balearic municipalities and it served nearly 2,000 establishments. More than half of these (1,054) were car repair workshops (multi-brand establishments, multi-service establishments, dealerships, fast car repairs, etc.), being the activity that generates the most of this waste.

A Balearic television crew visited one of these car repair workshops with Ainhöa Lizarbe, where they filmed how an oil change is carried out in a vehicle and how the waste is collected by an authorised manager. The waste oil must have been previously extracted and stored with the proper safety measures to ensure that the waste is not mixed with other substances or accidentally spilled. The filming also took place inside one of the waste oil storage plants in the Balearic Islands, where it was demonstrated how the waste is transported and stored.

During her presentation, Ainhöa Lizarbe explained how 100% of the waste oil collected in the Balearic Islands has been treated for subsequent use as new products. Specifically, 76% (2,028 t) of the waste oil managed last year in the archipelago was treated by regeneration, the environmentally-preferred treatment, which allowed the production of 1,269 tonnes of new lubricants. Thanks to the treated waste, the consumption of more than 596,000 barrels of oil that would have had to be produced by oil refining was avoided, as well as the emission of 1,353 tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere.

Furthermore, 24% of the waste oil managed in the Balearic Islands (629 t) was recovered for energy recovery to be converted into fuel for industrial use, similar to fuel oil used in thermal power stations, cement and paper mills. Thanks to this treatment, the emission of more than 345 tonnes of CO2 and the consumption of almost 65,000 barrels of oil that that would have been needed to make such a fuel from oil was avoided.

The Balearic Islands are a pioneer in commercial and industrial packaging management

During the report, Ainhöa Lizarbe also discussed GENCI, the multi-sector and multi-packaging system that collects all types of commercial and industrial packaging, regardless of its nature, format, material or shelf life, and which has been operating in the Balearic Islands since 2021.

GENCI was created in response to Law 8/2019 on waste and contaminated soils of the Balearic Islands, which obliges companies that market packaged products to organise and finance a collection and recycling system for packaging at the end of its useful life. This is known as Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR). The same requirement will apply to the rest of Spain from 2025, on the basis of Royal Decree 1055/2022 on packaging and packaging waste.

With SIGAUS's experience and infrastructure, GENCI's launch in the Balearic Islands has been very fast, and is already delivering significant results in the management of this commercial and industrial packaging waste. In 2022, GENCI managed 491 t of this packaging waste collected from 1,340 facilities in multiple sectors, such as hotels, shops, cleaning, car repairs, industry, the nautical sector, public waste companies and clean points, among others.
